Description
This in-depth module offers a thorough introduction to applied biotechnologies, with a particular focus on the use of bioreactors. It aims to equip students with the skills needed to design, pilot and optimize a biotechnological process for the production of biomass or molecules of interest, in connection with industrial sectors such as agri-food. The integration of practical work on fermentation in a bioreactor (16h) enables students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice through an experimental approach.
Objectives
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
- Acquire knowledge of different cultivation techniques
- Select a suitable microorganism and adapt a cultivation technique to achieve optimum production.
- Define and control the key parameters influencing a bioprocess
- Evaluate bioreactor performance (yield, productivity, oxygen transfer, etc.)
- Interpret experimental data from crop monitoring
- Apply the knowledge acquired to define and/or optimize an industrial production strategy

Mandatory prerequisites
core microbiology in semesters 5 to 8
Syllabus
Lectures :
- Introduction to the use of bioreactors
- Understanding parameters related to microbial growth
- Bioprocess evaluation (yield, productivity, metabolic quotients, oxygen transfer, etc.)
- Monitoring the physico-chemical and biological parameters of a bioprocess
- Separation and extraction of products of interest
Practical work :
- Setting up a bioreactor culture
- Monitoring growing conditions
- Analysis of results and group reporting
- Group debriefing session for feedback and consolidation of acquired knowledge
The module is accompanied by an on-site visit by ENSTBB teachers.
