Objectives

The long-term aim of English LV1 courses is to enable engineering students to achieve a sufficient level of fluency to undertake internships in English-speaking countries, or in professional environments where English is the working language (e.g. international university laboratories). Some students may also wish to spend an academic semester abroad at an English-speaking university, which requires a high level of listening, speaking and writing skills. This overall objective should be kept in mind from the very first year at ENSEIRB-MATMÉCA, within the CReL (Centre de Ressources en Langues).

In semester 5, the teaching objectives are as follows:

  • Review and consolidate fundamental English grammatical structures;

  • Explore the history and development of the English language;

  • Understand conceptual differences in the expression of time in English and French.

Regular in-class quizzes are used to assess student progress and reinforce learning throughout the semester.
Students are encouraged to actively practice oral English in class and to prepare their CVs in English, with a view to future international mobility opportunities (internships or academic exchanges).

At the same time, the course aims to reinforce mastery of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and writing skills. This progression enables students to prepare effectively for a minimum B2 level in TOEIC or IELTS before semester 7, a prerequisite for validation of their engineering degree.
