Description
The main objective of this teaching module is to encourage students to produce a basin synthesis based on data acquired in the field, supplemented by existing bibliographic and cartographic data. This involves using the various concepts and implementing the different geological methods taught in the first and second years to produce a coherent summary of the architecture of a sedimentary basin and a reconstruction of the different stages of its structural and sedimentary evolution. This work, which demonstrates a certain level of experience and maturity in this discipline, will serve as the basis for assessing the potential natural resources of this basin (mineral resources, energy resources, water, etc.).
This module is closely related to the "Basin synthesis: subsurface data" module, as it will mainly focus on objects similar to those analyzed using subsurface data (seismic, logs). Two types of systems will then be mainly analyzed at the basin scale: siliciclastic (or mixed) systems and carbonate systems. This approach complements that proposed at the reservoir scale. Geological synthesis work may focus on geological objects such as the Atlas Basin in Morocco, the southern Pyrenean Basin and/or the Middle East, i.e., basins located in various geodynamic contexts. For several years, this teaching module has been based on a geological field mission in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, during which a complete crossing of the mountain range provides an understanding of the different stages of the Jurassic intracontinental basin up to its tectonic inversion during the Alpine convergence. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of tectonic and diapiric movements on carbonate and mixed sedimentary systems.
Minimum skills to be acquired: collect, analyze, and interpret various geological data (field and bibliographic) in order to integrate them to produce a synthesis at the scale of a sedimentary basin (geometry of sedimentary bodies and evolution).
