Description
This module focuses on the physical layer of telecommunications systems. The course and project are based on the DVB-T communications standard.
Module objectives:
- to provide an overview of the functions found in the physical layer of current telecommunications systems.
- to highlight the design constraints when implementing the physical layer of a telecommunications system.

A first introductory part of the course presents the classic functions of the physical layer of a communications system (spectrally efficient modulation, error-correcting codes, interleaving, scrambling, drivers, etc.).
Project description:
A matlab description of a (simplified) communications chain for the DVB-T standard is provided. The first part of the project consists in describing and integrating, in matlab, the mapping and digital modulation part of the chain provided.
The second part of the project consists in designing the beginning of the transmission chain (scrambling, channel coding, etc.) based on the DVB-T standard specifications. The students have to implement certain functions in VHDL, while others are supplied in IP form and simply have to be integrated into the system.
