Description
The aim of the crystallography course is to answer two essential questions about the structure of crystalline materials: how to describe it, and how to determine it.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
Know the basic definitions of crystallography (crystal, lattice, mode, pattern... etc.)
Describe a crystal structure and reconstruct a structure from its description
Recognize and identify simple structures and the more complex ones derived from them.

Syllabus
The first chapter of the course is devoted to basic definitions of crystallography, followed by a description of crystals in terms of lattice, mode and pattern. This description introduces the physical parameters of the crystal (coordination, density, compactness), as well as the notions of interstitial sites and coordination polyhedra.
In the second chapter, crystals are described in terms of stacking. After a reminder of chemical bonding, AB stacking and its derived structures are described, followed by ABC stacking and derived structures, and finally a few non-compact structures.
