Description

Be able to:
- interpret the properties of polymeric materials on the basis of their structure and formulation
- identify the different levels of organization: from the linking of unit units in macromolecules to phase demixing in heterogeneous materials, via macromolecular cohesion and semi-crystalline morphology
- understand polymerization mechanisms to better control molar masses, their distribution and the architecture of macromolecules.

Syllabus

This course introduces the main properties and applications of polymer materials. After a brief introduction to define and classify polymers, materials are described from their chemical structure (sequence of monomer units, conformations and configurations of macromolecules, macromolecular masses) to their macroscopic properties (chemical, optical, thermal, electrical), including their synthesis (step and radical chain polymerization, techniques for controlling molar masses, chemical modification, etc.), their nomenclature and their morphology in the condensed state (cohesion, semi-crystalline state, phase transitions, textile fibers, etc.). ), their nomenclature and their morphology in the condensed state (cohesion, semi-crystalline state, phase transitions, textile fibers and elastomers). The main additives and their role are described, before moving on to the 26 major families of synthetic polymers. An effort is made to cover experimental techniques, including descriptions of major industrial synthesis processes.
