Description

This module aims to teach the basic physical principles of acoustics. The equations governing wave propagation in various media—both fluids and solids—are derived. Depending on the geometry of the problem (infinite or bounded media), the solutions to these wave equations are examined, taking boundary conditions into account. Each scenario studied is illustrated through applications relevant to the industrial world.
Course outline:
Acoustic waves in fluids - Progressive, standing, and guided waves. - Equation of propagation for plane waves. - Reflection/Refraction of plane waves. - Spherical waves - Radiation. Elastic waves in solids - Propagation in an infinite medium. - Propagation in a semi-infinite medium (Rayleigh waves). - Propagation in a bounded medium (Lamb waves). - Applications to NDT.
