Description

The course aims to provide students with:

- an introduction to scientific and technical English,
- an introduction to professional language (CVs, etc.),
- grammar revision in preparation for the TOEIC exam,
- work on the five language skills.

Remarks:

- Students with TOEIC 785 are not exempt from the courses. 

- Grades for these tests are based on attendance, oral participation in class and completion of homework assignments.

Objectives

At the end of the semester, students should:

- be able to write a CV and covering letter in English, and talk about their skills and training,
- be able to conduct an internship interview in English,
- be able to recognize and use basic technical vocabulary,
- be able to express themselves in a coherent language on familiar or technical subjects.

Diagnostic tools and grammatical and lexical remediation will be offered on the Moodle teaching platform.

Part 1: Introduction to professional English (8h)

Chapter 1: Applying for a job or internship abroad

- Learning to write a CV in English
- Learning to write a cover letter in English

Chapter 2: The job interview

- Talking about your skills and knowledge
- Being able to take part in a job interview

Part 2: Introduction to scientific and technical English (7h)

Chapter 1: Numbers and graphs

- Numbers: understanding them orally, knowing how to use them correctly
- Describing a graph

Chapter 2: Describing objects, using basic technical language

- Learning basic technical vocabulary
- Describing objects and processes

Part 3: Work on language skills and knowledge (9h) 

Chapter 1: TOEIC diagnostic test

Chapter 2: Listening comprehension training

Chapter 3: Grammar review (mainly on the learning platform)

"Philosophy of TD": communicative and interactive approach based essentially on the acquisition of fundamental grammatical and lexical skills and knowledge.

Assessment:

- Session 1: Continuous assessment throughout the semester. Compulsory exercises on Moodle (mark = 20%) + other individual or group work (= 80%).
- Session 2: written report on the internship, due at the end of August. No oral exam.
