Description

The main aim of this teaching module is to enable students to produce a basin synthesis based on data acquired in the field, supplemented by existing bibliographic and cartographic data. The aim is to use the different concepts and geological methods taught in the first and second years to produce a coherent synthesis of the architecture of a sedimentary basin and a reconstruction of the different stages in its structural and sedimentary evolution. This work, which marks a certain experience and maturity in this discipline, will serve as a basis for assessing the basin's potential natural resources (mineral, energy, water, etc.).

This module is closely related to the "Basin synthesis: subsurface data" module, since it will focus on objects similar to those analyzed from subsurface data (seismic, logs). Two types of systems will be analyzed at basin scale: silico-clastic (or mixed) systems and carbonate systems. This approach is complementary to that proposed for the reservoir scale. For several years now, this teaching module has been based on a geological field mission in the Moroccan Atlas, during which a complete traverse of the chain enables us to understand the different stages of the Jurassic intracontinental basin up to its tectonic inversion at the time of alpine convergence. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of tectonic and diapiric movements on carbonate and mixed sedimentary systems.

Minimum skills to be acquired: collect, analyze and interpret a variety of geological data (field and bibliographical) in order to integrate them into a synthesis on the scale of a sedimentary basin (geometry of sedimentary bodies and evolution).
