Description
The aim is to provide tools and methods for solving operational engineering problems in hydrogeology: drinking water supply, geothermal energy, civil engineering, mining and quarrying.
Hydrogeological field characterization is covered at two university experimental sites in sedimentary environments. Field methods include topographic levelling using differential GPS, advanced sheet testing and slug testing, tracer tests, borehole logs (video, gamma, conductivity, temperature, currentometry) and geochemical sampling, measurement and analysis.
Analytical and numerical hydrogeological modeling tools are based on concrete examples typically encountered in the professional field. The course also covers the problems of parameter estimation and quantification of uncertainties in the geosciences.
Skills to be acquired:
Field instruments and methods in hydrogeology, geothermics and geochemistry
Solving civil engineering problems, in particular controlled lowering of the water table (excavation dewatering, mining galleries, etc.). )
Characterize the consequences of lowering the water table on the subsoil (compaction, subsidence).
Quantify the phenomena associated with the transport of matter and heat in porous media in relation to operational issues (e.g. protection perimeters for AEP boreholes).
Propose and use analytical and/or numerical models adapted to hydrogeological systems, while being aware of the associated uncertainties.
