Description

At present, it is unthinkable to study our Earth without reference to physical data. The aim of this course is to provide students with the physics and chemistry they need to understand and interpret geological, geophysical and hydrogeological phenomena. Topics covered include: waves (description and propagation of a wave, etc.), which have numerous applications in the earth sciences, and electromagnetism, where the physical principles underlying subsurface prospecting will be presented. Finally, the program ends with hydrodynamics and hydrostatics, explaining the fundamental laws of flow in porous media and the fundamental equations of underground hydrodynamics. To introduce these fundamental courses, we will begin this module with a series of practical exercises designed to familiarize students with certain aspects of physics (measuring the speed of a wave, properties of light, magnetism).
Minimum skills to be acquired: Understanding, applying and using the physical and chemical properties involved in problems related to the study of the Earth and environmental sciences.
