Description

The aim of this module is to acquire the basic cartographic skills needed in the earth and environmental sciences. Particular emphasis will be placed on reading and drawing up geological maps and constructing associated geological cross-sections. The following subjects will be taught: (1) learning topographical field techniques (cartographic minute, GPS positioning, levelling techniques) (2) use of digital terrain models (DTM) (3) reading topographical maps (notion of scale, reference frame and projection...) (4) reading geological maps, drawing up structural and geological diagrams, drawing up geological maps, drawing geological cross-sections, drawing geological cross-sections...). ) (4) reading geological maps, drawing up structural diagrams and geological sections in different contexts (sedimentary, volcanic, crystalline basement), and using the manual as a database (5) geological interpretation of aerial and satellite photos using stereoscopic visualization and Google Earth Pro of hydrographic structures, erosion patterns and geological structures: monoclinal reliefs, folded reliefs, faults and unconformities in different contexts (6) reading and interpretation of vegetation maps, on the notions of vegetation series and vegetation layering in mountain areas.Fundamental notions of the geology of France will be covered through analysis of the 1:1,000,000 geological map of France and personal projects.
This module includes a supplement on the analysis of sedimentary basins, with the aim of preparing students for field schools on current sedimentary systems and in Pyrenean Tertiary basins.
Minimum skills to be acquired : Acquire "classic" cartographic basics, modern mapping methods using tools derived from remote sensing and photo-interpretation, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
