Description

Objectives:
The Current and Ancient Sedimentary Systems module aims to present the functioning of different continental and coastal sedimentary systems: autochthonous regolithic, aeolian, lacustrine, glacial, gravity, littoral and fluvial systems, etc. The impact of physico-chemical and biological factors on these sedimentary systems will be addressed on different time (present to million years) and space scales. The impact of physico-chemical and biological factors on these sedimentary systems at different timescales (current to million years) and spatial scales will be addressed. A particular focus will be placed on the evolution of these systems (1) over recent geological times, which have seen natural climatic changes guided by glacial-interglacial cycles, for example, and (2) in response to recent anthropogenic climatic changes (erosion, ocean acidification, etc.). We will discuss the possible adaptations of these sedimentary systems to these global changes. Another aim will be to show that characterizing current systems enables us to understand heterogeneities in ancient series, and thus to develop predictive models for underground reservoirs. An introduction to the issue of energy transition will illustrate the role of sedimentary geology in understanding underground reservoirs.
