Description
This module develops the concepts needed to implement and use numerical models in hydrogeology. The theoretical part covers the general framework of model development, with a brief presentation of numerical resolution techniques. The remainder of the course is based on the use of a software package to develop and operate a hydrogeological model.
A common thread based on a real case study provides a concrete overview of the direct applications of this type of tool.
An introduction to the problem of transport in porous media is provided to give students the essential notions for dealing with basic pollution problems (1D and 2D analytical solutions for the transport of dissolved elements in porous media).
Skills to be acquired:
Conceptualize and transcribe a hydrogeological system with a view to its integration into a numerical model
Make practical use of a hydrogeological modeling software package
Develop a critical sense of results
Be operational in a professional environment on simple modeling issues.
