Syllabus
Every engineer working for a company is or will be required to use a management system formalized in accordance with regulatory and/or standardized requirements. They need to understand its meaning and use. Whether they are in charge of R&D projects, production, technical or scientific studies, they need to understand the role and impact of regulations on their activities and objectives. This applies to product and service quality, environmental management and preservation, and the maintenance of personal hygiene, health and safety. As a supervisor, or even team leader, the engineer knows how a management system and its steering tools work. They are also able to use these tools as part of a continuous improvement process.
This third-year module is part of a progression of courses over the student's three years of training. It deals with the theme of management systems and how they are used by engineers as part of their management responsibilities. The various QHSE themes are covered.
Year 1: QHSE risk management in the company, the role of regulations and the consequences for the company.
Year 2: the management system of organizations, basic concepts, common standards and recognition procedures.
Year 3: managing and steering with the management system, corporate governance, reporting tools, continuous improvement.
Key words: Companies, business lines, risks, regulations, standardization, system, management, supervision, steering, cultures.
The teaching method combines academic approaches with individual or group work, enabling students to put into practice by analyzing what is done in companies. It is based on four phases:
Academic course to provide students with the necessary knowledge,
Group work to analyze company practices,
Pooling and correction of work through oral feedback from each group,
Consideration of comments and written feedback from each group.
The module is structured as follows:
Corporate governance,
Managing with the system, objectives, indicators, dashboards,
Improvement tools: handling non-conformity, corrective actions, internal audits, improvement plans,
Practical studies on internal auditing,
Feedback and discussion.
Assessment of knowledge acquired is based on group work on one of the topics covered during the course. This involves preparing a power point document and giving an oral presentation on the subject. Assessment is based on the oral presentation and the written document.
It would be desirable to identify interfaces with modules dealing with the following subjects:
Change management
Resource management - arguing needs and identifying opportunities
Reporting as a decision-making tool
